DIY SKINCARE: 7 INGREDIENTS THAT MAY BE HARMFUL TO YOUR SKIN

Have you ever imagined yourself as a skincare formulator at home and decided to make DIY skincare at home? Well, we know you have had a lot of fun making different care “products” by yourself. This is not only a popular entertainment for teenagers who don’t have enough resources to get professional skincare, but also for those who enjoy making treatments for their skin on their own.

To start with, let’s state that it’s not the best idea to make a DIY skincare product at home. The thing is, you don’t have proper sterile conditions at home. If your profession is not a formulator, you probably don’t have a laboratory in your house. So, even if you make perfect care products, you cannot guarantee their correct storage conditions and period. And we don’t speak about the fact that you cannot process the raw materials so that they are suitable for applying to your face - we mean sharp edges, perfect state, softness, etc.

But if we didn’t succeed in convincing you not to make DIY treatments at home, then we would suggest at least not using some ingredients, as they may be harmful to your skin. We have gathered some valuable information, so you will know what not to use on your skin.

1. Lemon juice

Lemon juice is famous for its high Vitamin C content. It is widely used by DIY lovers as it lightens dark spots, and reduces fine lines and the appearance of wrinkles.

But the problem with lemon juice is that it is highly acidic - its pH level is about 2, and your skin’s pH is 4-5 - so lemon juice can cause much irritation and inflammation, and will damage the protective barrier of your skin.

As a result, it makes your skin sensitive to the UV rays of the sun, that’s why it will be more exposed to sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and, unfortunately, even skin cancer. So please avoid using lemon juice in any DIY skincare products, even try to avoid applying it on your hair.

2. Baking soda

Another disruptor of your skin's pH level is baking soda, which is highly alkaline. It is even more dangerous than highly acidic lemon juice. Baking soda is well-known for its cleansing feature, it is mainly used to whiten skin and cleanse pores from blackheads when added to homemade scrubs.

But the small particles of baking soda are extremely sharp, and even if we ignore the fact that soda itself is not good for being alkaline, we must mention that the sharp parts may harm your skin badly, causing irritation and inflammation.

Because of its pH level, it will cause moisture loss, and it can break the natural production of oil during the day. Let’s exclude this one ingredient from homemade skincare products as well.

3. Apple cider vinegar

Have you noticed how acidic ingredients have occupied a significant place in DIY skincare products? Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient that doesn’t make dermatologists happy for sure. Many people use apple cider vinegar as a cleanser or a toner that can help treat acne or hyperpigmentation. It can whiten your skin and hair.

But remember that apple cider vinegar is highly acidic and can cause inflammation even because of just one usage.

4. Coconut oil

clean beauty

Surprised, right? It’s because you have seen so many ads and posts about coconut oil usage in literally every single product - hair care products, body care products, face masks, cleansers, everything. But coconut oil is not the best hero - it has a lot of dangerous features. And, of course, when coconut oil is included in lab-formulated professional skincare, it is in the right amounts and has been processed in the right way. They don’t just take raw coconut oil and pour it into the mixture of ingredients, no. And doing so will damage your body more than you think. The explanation is here: coconut oil is occlusive, which means it traps the moisture inside your skin, and together with it, it keeps the dirt and bacteria, by clogging your pores.

It is rated 4 of 5 on the comedogenic scale, which means that it will definitely clog your pores and cause inflammation, breakouts, and acne.

So, even if you want to use coconut oil for body massage or as a body mask, cleanse it immediately after and never leave it on your skin.

5. Raw eggs

The protein contained in egg whites is widely known for improving skin elasticity and skin tone. Besides, they can tighten your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Maybe it is loved because it gives a gentle feeling, but believe us the game is not worth the candle. Eggs can contain salmonella - dangerous bacteria that can cause poisoning. And we are sure you don’t want to have it in your skin, right? Then no more eggs in DIY skincare.

6. Sugar

Sugar is widely used in homemade scrubs. It is well-known for being a rough exfoliator, but in reality, sugar does nothing but harms your skin horribly.

The thing is, sugar granules have extremely sharp edges, and they can cause microcracks on your skin by damaging its barrier as well.

Thus, it can cause inflammation, irritation, and breakouts as a result. So please avoid using sugar in your homemade products, exclude it even from your body scrubs - you don’t need to damage yourself for exfoliation.

7. Coffee

Coffee has miraculous features as an ingredient. Coffee seed extract (which is by the way used in the Advanced Moisturizer and the Clarifying Gel-Moisturizer by BBA Organic) reduces redness and boosts collagen production in your skin. It helps make your skin tone healthy and contributes to skin repair. But you can’t get the same result by just rubbing ground coffee into your skin. Moreover, you will have your skin damaged because of sharp particles of ground coffee, even the finest ground.
